Learning Journal Post #4

I learned a lot about communicating and collaborating in learning module 4. The class had group projects on different social media tools such as blogging, micro-blogging, social networking and wikis. My group did "virtual worlds" and I learned a lot about them as I researched them for the project. I took a different approach to researching them, I made my own second life account and went to various locations and tours. I learned about the Sistine Chapel and that people spend Mardi Gras online in virtual worlds they create with videos and music playing as they virtually dance. My part of the group assignment was to research the education in virtual worlds and surprisingly the area that education is used in virtual worlds is massive! Children have virtual worlds and adults have virtual worlds designed specifically for education and many teachers/professors use them to recreate virtual classrooms. I also learned more about social bookmarking and I became more familiar with delicious.

Five Terms I learned
IMAP4 - Internet Messaging Access Protocol to receive email
List Serve/ Mailing List - A form of discussion taking place over email
Micro-Blogging - Combines blogging and instant messaging
Wikis - web pages that can be edited by authorized users (good for quick information)
POP3 - Post Office Protocol used to receive email

A really good video on education in Second Life
